Now’s the Time to Speak to Congress
March 5th, 2010
Congress is discussing the renewal of the Child Nutrition Act as we speak. We can improve how we feed our school children if Congress strengthens the CNA and grants $1 more per child in the budget. Chef Ann Cooper, Boulder Valley School District’s interim Food Services Director, is a strong, tireless advocate for healthy school lunches. Read her recent Washington Post article here.
And her email:
“There has been a lot of talk over the past few weeks about Michelle Obama and her mission to keep our kids healthy. Her “Let’s Move” campaign is critically important to the future health of America and it’s her job to raise awareness about issues that are important to our country. It’s my job, though, to challenge people to take action.
“Every day, millions of children eat lunch, and sometimes breakfast at school. For many, these are the only hot meals they’ll get all day. To truly support the first lady’s initiative, we should ask our elected officials for an additional $5.4 billion annually to support child nutrition through the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act. An additional $5.4 billion a year would ensure an extra dollar for every student at lunchtime and could guarantee that fresh, healthy foods find their way to our kids’ bellies.” — The Washington Post, March 5, 2010
Congress has the power to change the way our children eat. Join me and lunch box advocates from across the country in asking Congress to invest one more dollar a day in healthy school food.
This may seem like a no brainer to you and I, but we’re going to have to fight for every penny and each small improvement.
Let’s help our kids together. Tell Congress to do the right thing.

March 7 Coffee Tasting at The Cup Postponed
March 3rd, 2010We are postponing our coffee tasting at The Cup this Sunday, March 7, due to too few sign-ups. However, The Cup and Conscious Coffee are poised to offer it again when more people can attend. BTW, we heard CC’s Mark speak last night at the SF Local dinner at Arugula (check out chef Alec Schuler – a true artist in the kitchen!), and we encourage you to find out about the world of coffee growing and buying. He has a lot of important info to share. We’ll keep you posted about the next tasting date.
Eat Local at Arugula March 2
February 20th, 2010Slow Food and Arugula invite you to a special all local dinner on Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at 6:30pm at Arugula Ristorante (2785 Iris Avenue Boulder, CO 80304) The chefs are challenging themselves to make the entire meal with local products, They named the dinner “Eating local in Colorado at the most difficult time of the year!”
The menu features tilapia, pork and beef which are easy to source in Colorado at this time of year. The produce however is more difficult, it consists of “cellar vegetables” harvested in the fall or things the chefs canned back in September.

All proceeds go to support Slow Food programs.

Wendy and Chris of The Cup are offering this special cupping event to Slow Food members in Boulder.
Mark from Conscious Coffees will guide the tasting event. The coffees are certified organic and grown on small family farms which have been collectively self-organized into cooperatives, from which they are directly purchased. The mission of Conscious Coffees is to create long-term relationships with growers, customers, and the environment, which transcend volume and profits, and emphasize cup quality, human rights, and sustainability.
The Cupping will involve smelling, sipping and slurping each coffee while taking notes on all the flavors, the body, the acidity and the overall balance of the coffee. After tasting the various coffees, we will discuss what it is we tasted, what we liked and did not like, the history of the region, and the attributes of the coffee.
